Can you talk me through how a project would work?

A common question I am asked is how I work and how a project is generally constructed. If you would like to know what you can expect from working with me, I have listed the steps of a typical project below.

1) Discussing a project

In this first step, you would get in touch with me asking for a quote or information on what I provide. This may be over the telephone, skype or e-mail. It is unlikely that I will be able to give you a quote immediately. Each project is different and every website has different objectives. Instead I will ask you fill out a project form. This form gives me some information about yourself. The website you would like built as well as your goals and objectives for the site.

Upon reading this I will create a proposal. The proposal will talk you through what I can provide, any technologies I will be using as well as a costing for project.

2) Agreement on a proposal

If you are happy with a proposal then we can cover the ground work. There are several things that are required before a project begins. A contract needs to be signed. This contract details what I will deliver and the things that are required from yourself. A sample of the contact can be found here. Once the contract has been signed I will require a deposit to begin the work. Once the deposit has been paid work can begin.

3) Agreeing a design

Based on the details delivered in the project form I will create a design for your website. When the design is completed you will be sent a copy to look over. At this point you will be able to raise and concerns and should it be required, request an ammendment. This consultation process goes back and forth until you are ready to sign off on a design. On average a design goes through 2 series of amendments.

4) Developing your website.

With a design agreed, your website will be developed. I encourage clients to get involved about half way through the development process and give all clients access to the website as soon as the core sections are completed. This has two advantages. Firstly, you can see the speed of the development. Instead of receiving an update via e-mail, you can see with your own eyes the work which has been done.

The second big advantage is that you can provide input as the site is being constructed. You may realise that you will require additional input boxes to add information to your website. Alternatively you might like the news to display slightly differently than originally agreed. This is all fine. All I require is a phone call or an e-mail sent detailing the change and the reason for it. Usually it will be done on the same day.

My goal is deliver you a site which your visitors love and that you can administer with as little effort as possible. By getting you involved during the development stages this goal is far easier to attain.

5) Testing

At this point the website is essentially built. It will have been tested by myself and will be as close to bug free as possible. There are two things which need to be tested at during this phase. Firstly accessibility and usability. Do the testers pick up on the site message? Can they easily navigate the site? Are they aware of all the features the site provides? Receiving feedback on this will allow me to identify anything that can be tweaked to improve usability.

The second thing to look out for are any miscellaneous bugs. It is unlikely that any will be found, however having a sample group of testers roaming around the site ensures that anything that can be found will be found.

6) Complete Payment and Transfer Website

At this point the site will be ready to be deployed on your web host. If you require me to set up some hosting for you I can do this. Once the final balance has been paid the site will be set up on your web server.

7) Guarantee and aftercare

I guarantee all of my coding for 2 months. This means that if a bug is found it will be fixed within 8 working hours for no cost.

On top of this, I am available 5 days a week via telephone and 6 days a week via e-mail to answer any queries you may have about anything. Whether you need help to update your website or would like to plot the next feature for your website. I am always around to advise and aid you.
